The Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Sr. are interred in a massive memorial at Hollywood Forever.
Senior’s widow, second wife Sylvia, Lady Ashley, commissioned the long rectangular reflecting pool, raised tomb, and classic Greek architecture. Senior had an interesting background filled with family drama and grew up in Denver, Colorado. Married first to Mary Pickford, she and Douglas Sr. along with D.W. Griffith and Charlie Chaplin started United Artists Studio in order to establish complete artistic control over their films. Later Douglas and Mary helped to organize the Motion Picture Fund to assist those in the industry who could not work, or were unable to meet their bills.
At 19, Jr. Fairbanks married Joan Crawford and started a long film career. But, he was also a distinguished Naval Officer. He is called the “Father of the U.S. Navy Beach Jumpers” was awarded Legion of Merit for Valor, the Légion d’honneur, the Croix de guerre with Palm, the British Distinguished Service Cross, The Silver Star and was a an Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 1982 he was awarded the German Federal Cross of Merit for his contribution to the relief of the needy in occupied Germany.
